1989, My year of big decisions. I decided that I would move to Paris,
France to truly concentrate on the different ideas and projects that
I wanted to do for the Contrabass.
In my first year in Paris, I concentrated on my trio music of piano,
bass and drums doing some radio broadcasts from Radio France as well
as touring with the trio. There were also concerts and recordings with
such artist as Pharoah Sanders (" Welcome to Love" and "Moonchild"--Timeless
Records), Barney Wilen (French Movie Themes), Lavelle (Tribute to Nat
"King" Cole). I also decided to start my group known as the Stafford
James Project. The "project" was started to really show the contrabass
in all of its facets. Firstly, in 1990, the "project" had two trumpets
with rhythm section. The trumpets were Freddie Hubbard and Flavio Boltro.
There were memorable concerts, in particular, the Ivrea Jazz Festival
in Italy.
In 1991 I performed with the National Ukrainian Orchestra of LVOV.
There was a recording made on the Audophon label of the music of Igor
Stravinsky, "Firebird". The International Red Cross also played an important
role in its co-sponsorship.
Later I went on tour with the Freddie Hubbard "All-Stars".
